I keep a beach notebook for every coastal trip, and my Tamarindo pages are full of little notes about different beach personalities. Some shores are made for surfing, others for slow swims, seafood lunches, or simply sitting with a coffee while the Pacific does its thing.
This guide follows my favorite stops around Tamarindo, from famous stretches to quieter corners of Guanacaste. I verified these recommendations during my latest Costa Rica notes update and focused on what kind of day each beach actually delivers.
Quick beach guide
- Best surf days: Playa Grande, Avellanas, Negra
- Best swimming scenery: Conchal, Flamingo, Nacascolo
- Best quiet escapes: Junquillal, Mina, Cabuyal
Playa Tamarindo

I usually start here because Tamarindo is the easiest beach base in Guanacaste. The wide sand, sunset walks, restaurants, and surf schools make it a first-time Costa Rica favorite.
I like arriving early before the afternoon crowds. My notebook tip: bring sandals because the sand gets impressively warm by lunch.
Playa Langosta

Just beside Tamarindo, Langosta feels like the quieter sibling. I come here for rocky tide pools and peaceful walks rather than a busy beach day.
It is a great choice when I want Tamarindo convenience without Tamarindo energy.
Playa Grande

Playa Grande is where I send travelers who want waves, space, and a more natural setting. The beach is part of Las Baulas Marine National Park, known for leatherback turtle conservation.
I prefer it for long walks and watching surfers rather than casual swimming.
Playa Conchal

Conchal earns its reputation because the shoreline is unlike most beaches nearby. The crushed shell surface creates a beautiful pale beach texture that feels almost polished.
I pack snorkeling gear here because the clear water makes this one of my favorite scenic stops.
My tip
Arrive early for easier parking and calmer water.
Playa Brasilito

Brasilito is practical, local, and charming. I often use it as a relaxed stop before walking toward Conchal, enjoying the small village beach atmosphere.
It is less polished than nearby resorts, which is exactly why I enjoy it.
Playa Flamingo

Flamingo feels more developed and polished, with pretty views and easy access to boat trips. I mark it as a sunset and sailing beach in my notebook.
It works especially well for travelers who like comfort mixed with ocean time.
Playa Potrero

Potrero has a slower rhythm than many Guanacaste beaches. I like its calm village feel and the chance to enjoy a less rushed coastal afternoon.
This is where I go when my camera needs fewer people and more horizon.
Playa Avellanas

Avellanas is one of my favorite Tamarindo day trips because it balances surf culture with open beach space. The waves attract surfers, while the shoreline offers quiet sunset walks.
I usually stay longer than planned here, which is how good beach days happen.
Playa Negra

Playa Negra has a legendary surf reputation. I would not choose it for a gentle swim, but I love watching the powerful Pacific waves.
Bring patience, a camera, and respect for ocean conditions.
Playa Junquillal

Junquillal is one of my favorite quieter recommendations because it feels wonderfully removed. The beach combines wild scenery and fewer crowds.
I visit for sunsets, walks, and the feeling that the coastline still belongs to nature.
Playa Real

Playa Real is a scenic choice when I want a peaceful landscape rather than a famous name. The area offers soft sands and coastal views.
I consider it a good stop for travelers building a slower Guanacaste route.
Playa Mina

Playa Mina feels like a hidden-corner beach day. I like it for travelers who enjoy quiet natural surroundings more than beach facilities.
My practical note: pack water and snacks because remote beaches reward preparation.
Playa Cabuyal

Cabuyal is the kind of beach I recommend to people who say they want to escape the crowds. It offers a remote Pacific coastline feeling.
I would make this a picnic stop and give myself extra driving time.
Playa Danta

Danta combines beautiful scenery with the stylish surroundings of Las Catalinas nearby. I love the contrast between green hills and clear water.
It is a lovely place for a slow morning, especially with a walk along the shore.
Playa Dantita

Dantita feels more secluded than its neighbor Danta. The smaller beach rewards travelers who enjoy short hikes and hidden views.
I treat it as a half-day adventure rather than a quick photo stop.
Playa Hermosa Guanacaste

Playa Hermosa is a dependable choice for travelers who want easy swimming and a relaxed setting. I appreciate its gentle bay atmosphere.
It is the kind of beach where I can read a paperback for hours without checking the clock.
Playa Ocotal

Ocotal is a smaller beach with a peaceful feel and attractive water views. I recommend it for travelers seeking a calmer coastal escape.
The cove setting makes it a nice change from wider surf beaches.
Playa Coco

Playas del Coco is lively, convenient, and full of services. I visit when I want restaurants and easy logistics alongside ocean time.
It is less about solitude and more about having everything nearby.
Playa Panamá

Panamá is one of my favorite gentle-water options near the Papagayo area. The calm setting makes it ideal for slow swimming and relaxing.
I recommend it for travelers who want a softer beach day after exploring.
Playa Nacascolo

Nacascolo feels protected and peaceful, with the kind of scenery that makes me stop writing and simply look around. It is a quiet bay experience.
I save beaches like this for the end of a trip when I want one final calm ocean morning.
